Marque named Firm of the Year!

01:55 Friday 23rd December 2011

FirmSpy, the mysterious website that dares to say it like it is when it comes to law firms, has been kind enough to name Marque its Corporate Law Firm of the Year for 2011.  We're touched, humbled, chuffed and celebrating.

Read all the nice things they said about us:

Chile Peppers Rampant!

05:27 Tuesday 13th December 2011

On 6 December 2011, Marque's lunchtime netball team the Chile Peppers rounded out the most successful season by any sporting team since Tiger Woods got distracted.

Having gone through the regular season undefeated and with a goal difference of 129 to 53, the Chile Peppers destroyed their semi final opponents 12-1 to set up the grudge match of the century, facing off against ancient nemesis Gadens in the Grand Final.  By a scheduling quirk, the two titans of the competition had not actually played each other.  This was going to be epic.

As it proved to be.  Played under leaden skies and on a virtual ice rink of a grass court, the game did everything but disappoint.  The first half certainly went Gadens' way, and they led 6-3 at half-time.  The Chile Peppers' gun shooter, Erica, had admittedly dropped from her usual 99.5% scoring rate to a merely human 85%, but essentially the team was struggling to adjust to the wet and slippery conditions and a really good opponent.

At half-time Chaz, the Team Spirit Mentor, gave us a strongly motivational pep talk which none of us identified as sarcastic until well after the game, and we took to the field with fresh resolve and Nathan subbed in to Goal Shooter - kind of handy since his hands are higher than the hoop.

Still, we slipped immediately to 7-3 behind on the scoreboard and our support crew (that is, the entire firm) started thinking about lunch options.  But miracles do happen, our shooters found their range, we started to dominate the mid-court and clawed back the lead.  With 10 seconds of regular time to go, Erica potted the equaliser and it was all tied up.

First extra time went past in a flash of reciprocal scoring and at the end of that, we were still tied up.

So, double extra time and a golden goal sudden death tension-packed you could've heard a pin drop if not for all the screaming showdown. At which point our Centre Jayne pulled out her Mona Vale half-price drinks rock-scissors-paper strategy and got us the invaluable first centre pass.  The rule was, first team to score after the other team had touched the ball would win.  The ball went down to the goal circle, Nathan shot a rocket towards Erica, nearly took her head off, it went out, they got the throw, Nathan redeemed himself with the timeliest intercept in the history of netball, passed off to Erica, Boom!  And we won by one goal.

Yes it was at least as exciting as that.  Given that Marque Lawyers is in relative terms the Cote d'Ivoire of the legal sporting fraternity, with less than 1/30 the number of potential players than their opponents, our victory was akin to Princess Beatrice taking out the entire royal line of succession and grabbing the throne herself.  So, of course we're gloating.  Totally deserved.

Chile Peppers.  World Champions.

New Corporate/M&A Partner

08:20 Thursday 17th November 2011

We've got a new partner!  Chaz Dheer is joining us, to head up our Corporate/M&A practice.

Chaz is a recent import from the UK where he was most recently a partner with the London firm of Simons Muirhead & Burton.  He has wide experience in M&A, private equity and public company work, as well as general commercial with a particular focus on media and technology companies.  He joins our other partners in the corporate/commercial team, Kim Middleton and Enjel Phoon.

Our managing partner Michael Bradley said "Chaz's skills and experience fit perfectly with our clients' needs in the corporate sphere.  and we've been looking to hire someone called Chaz for years, so you can imagine how delighted we are."

Commenting on the move, Chaz said that he was attracted to Marque by many things, not least the impending Christmas party and the recent undefeated run of its lunchtime netball team.

Seven partners.  Just like the Seven Samurai, but more ninja.

Marque announces GetUp! Clerkship

01:19 Friday 2nd September 2011

Marque is very proud of our relationship with the amazing organisation GetUp!, as their primary legal providers.

Now, with GetUp!'s support, we are able to offer a second summer clerkship this year.  The GetUp! Clerk will be mainly dedicated to assisting GetUp! with its legal issues, including the kind of complex legal policy work that's involved in issues as diverse as asylum seekers, carbon pricing and same sex marriage.

The clerk will work at Marque along with our other summer clerk, and still get exposed to how a law firm (well, this law firm) works and obtain a wide range of commercial legal experience.  Best of both worlds, really.

GetUp! is funding this clerkship and we're really excited about it.  It's a fantastic initiative and, best of all, we get to hire another very happy law student!
